Keep Your Stick on Ice
The Wings and the Avs are out on the ice
And from my point of view, they're not being nice
The pressure is on, the time's almost up
What's really at play is the Stanley Cup
It strikes me funny, as they shoot for the goal
That often the puck continues to roll
Right past the net on the opposite side
And instead of the puck, there's a man inside
Now, I'm just an amateur at this game
But I have to ask all the same
Is this a new twist on manning the goal?
Are you supposed to put a man in whole?
Three men on the boards over one tiny puck
The moment's intense but it looks like they're stuck
No movement is seen as each concentrates
On this piece of ice between their skates
Something or someone has to give
The puck bursts out as though forced through a sieve
Beauty in motion now, as they start to play
But soon sticks and players are in disarray
Two Wings and an Av race from the side
Meet in the middle - and collide!
The puck escapes from this melee
And slides out the opposite way
The Avs pick it up and race to score
You can see the Wings are getting sore
Avs racing now with their skillful-armed sticks
Wings back on their feet, catch up to them quick
one Av takes aim, sends the puck on its way
But a Wing intercepts in a beautiful play
The crowd is wild. They're on their feet
This was the team "they couldn't beat"
Now the goalie for Avs is crouched in defense
Of the approaching blur of Wing offense
They play the puck with exceptional skill
Seize the moment and move in for the kill
Just at the moment when victory looks sure
An unexpected movement, and all is a blur
Two Wings are down on top of the puck
Was it foul-play or just bad luck?
Our "scoring" Wing is slugging away
At the Av who moved in on his victory play
Sure that the miss and his fateful fall
Was some villainous action seen by all
A predetermined dastardly deed
Bearing down from a distance at full speed
Tempers flare, a huge fight ensues
A scuffle of uniforms, reds a-tumble with blues
The clock stops ... all action suspended in time
It's declared official: The Wing's out of line
To the penalty box he flies in a rage
While the cameras zero in on this infamous cage
The best of our scorers is now in disgrace
While his team-members scramble to fill his place
As the puck is lost in the blur of skates
Imperceptibly now, it moves between mates
One minute to go, one point behind
The guy in the box is on everyone's mind
The Wings weave the puck between enemy lines
Watching them move is something sublime
The goalie lurches left and falls on his side
Reverses the puck's determined slide
Just at that moment, our prisoner's released
flies to the rescue to his team-mates' relief
Finds the puck in its flight
Curves his stick to the right
Makes contact at last
And the puck is passed
Past the goalie's face
With just enough space
He scores!
The crowd roars!
OVERTIME ...
